As newcomer to Canada there are different pathways to attain residency status and legal rights as you transition from a temporary status (such as work or study permits) to permanent residency (PR) and attain legal rights as a resident.
Today will be listing 3 pathways;
Refugee or Asylum Claim
This pathway is eligible for people who are running away from their country in fear of persecution or harm if they return to their home country.
This is determined by an independent Tribunal makes decisions on immigration and refugee matters (Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB). The applicants must demonstrate a credible fear of persecution and may apply for asylum at a port of entry or from within Canada.
Once the claim is accepted by the IRB, the claimant can apply for PR and are eligible for work and study permits while awaiting a decision on their case.
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) to Permanent Residency
This pathway is for International students who have graduated from a designated Canadian learning institution which allows them to work in Canada for up to three years.
You can read more about the PGWP on the Government of Canada Website.
Spouse or Common-Law Partner Sponsorship (Inland Sponsorship)
To qualify for this, one has to be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to sponsor their spouse or common-law partner if they’re already living together in Canada.
You must prove a genuine relationship and meet financial requirements. The sponsored person may also be eligible for an open work permit while their PR application is processed.
